Unusual Things You Can Bet On Online
If you enjoy having a bet, you’ve probably placed money on horse racing, football and possibly a few other sports. Online betting has greatly increased the number of options we have when betting. Nowadays there are some extremely bizarre markets you can bet on. Let’s look at a few of the most unusual things you’ve been able to bet on online:
Julian Assange
In 2012, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, in order to avoid extradition for various crimes. You could place a bet on his eventual method of departure. Conventional modes of transport such as police cars and state vehicles were priced relatively lowly. However, methods such as laundry van (200-1), tunnel (200-1) and even jetpack (500-1) were lifted. So if you thought Assange was going to make a James Bondesque departure from the Embassy, you were in luck!
Flat Earth
The Flat Earth Society doesn't get much credence in 2021, but amazingly there are still plenty of people who subscribe to the theory that we all live on a flat surface. Should you be among their number, you can put your money where your month is and take odds of 63-1 on the ‘consensus being that the Earth is flat’ by the end of 2025.
The Royal Family
There are a number of markets relating to the Royal family. You can bet on the name of Harry and Meghan’s second child (Andrew at 100-1 seems an especially unlikely option!), as well as the baby’s gender and weight. Meanwhile, you can also have a wager on the eventual occupation of Harry’s nephew Archie. Lawyer is the favourite at 4-1, but if you think he’s on track to become a train driver you can get odds of 50-1. The only problem is that Archie is currently just one years old, so you’re going to have a very long wait to find out if you’re a winner.
The Razzies
Betting on the winners at the Oscars or Golden Globes has been popular for a long time, but in recent years you’ve been able to gamble on the winners at the Razzies - the awards ceremony for the worst movies of the year. The ceremony takes place in April, and the current favourite is Robert Downey jr’s flop Dolittle (2-1). Other badly received movies such as Artemis Fowl and The Witches are also available at short odds, but if you fancy a punt, we’d recommend the accent mangling Wild Mountain Thyme at a very generous 18-1.
The end of the world
And finally...we’re not entirely sure how you’d collect your winnings for this one, but in 2018 Paddy Power were offering 500-1 on the world ending in that year. What’s more, if you think an asteroid will prove to be the downfall of our planet, you can bet on which country will have the first impact. If you’ve watched any blockbuster disaster movies, you won’t be surprised to know that the USA is the firm favourite.
