Check out our Champions League match previews for this week’s semi-final first legs.
Champions League Match Previews 13th April
The Champions League has reached the semi-final stage and all four teams will fancy their chances of lifting the trophy. Two fascinating looking first legs take place this week, so here’s our preview of the action:
Real Madrid play host to Chelsea in a battle between two clubs who signed up to the doomed European Super League. It’s been a controversial and acrimonious couple of weeks in the world and football, but both sides will be hoping to let their football do the talking from now on. Madrid showed their prowess at both ends of the pitch in their 3-1 quarter-final win over Liverpool. A vibrant attacking performance in the first leg followed by a solid defensive display in the second leg, saw them ease past the Premier League champions. They do still retain hopes of winning the La Liga title, but Saturday’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Real Betis leaves them playing catchup to both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Porto was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. Porto’s only goal came with virtually the last kick of the second leg, and Chelsea were in complete control for the vast majority of the tie. Aside from a bizarre 5-2 defeat to West Brom, Thomas Tuchel’s side have been in excellent form and his defence has proved very hard to break down. Whilst they will be hoping to snatch an away goal in Madrid, their number one priority will be stopping Madrid claiming a healthy lead ahead of next week’s second leg.
The following night, Manchester City visit Paris St Germain in a mouthwatering tie that brings together some of the elite players in world football. PSG were magnificent in their quarter-final win over Bayern Munich. Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were in sublime attacking form in that tie, whilst the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Leandro Paredes did the hard work in midfield to limit Bayern’s threat. They will need a similar level of performance here to get past a Manchester City side who are in supreme form. City cruised to a fourth consecutive League Cup triumph on Sunday and are on the verge of adding the Premier League title to their collection. Given the array of talent at their disposal, it’s very hard to predict City’s starting line up. But with the likes of Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernado Silva and Sergio Aguero in their ranks, it’s guaranteed that they will possess a huge attacking threat.
This is another extremely close looking tie, City will be looking to keep PSG’s star studded attack in check, but the Parisian’s know that a convincing victory in this home leg is their best chance of reaching the final.
It’s all set to be a thrilling week of action, full of goals, excitement and shocks. So enjoy the first legs of the semi-finals and look out for our Champions League review later in the week.
